Plastic Egg Color Matching

“Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning”

Still have those colorful plastic eggs scattered around your house? Don't put them away yet! They are PERFECT for so many activities that I keep some closet all year round for open ended play opportunities.

One of our favorite activities is a simple color matching/fine motor activity. I simply seperate the tops from the bottoms and scatter them about in a bed of easter grass. She'll inevitably sit down and get started putting them together again. It's fun, it's simple and it usually transforms into another activity.

You can make this activity more involved by using more eggs, patterned eggs, and lots of different shades of the same color. The sky is the limit and it's great for lots of different age groups. Plopping a baby down in a sea of multi colored eggs and easter grass is a great sensory experience and as they get older there are only slight adjustments needed to keep the activity fresh. Lucy is three and still loves this!

We step the simple color matching game up a notch by adding an egg carton, eggs that are a little harder to snap together (they have a wavy pattern), more colors, and some items that would encourage imaginitive play. Lucy adores the fuzzy baby chicks and makes up all sorts of games with them.

Lucy will play with eggs, an egg carton and baby chicks all morning as the activity transforms into whatever she can imagine. Do your kids love plastic eggs? Have you tried making them into a game? Let me know in the comments, I would love to hear from you!
