This activity was a "Pinterest fail" for looks but an total win for fun. I saw a "button" tree somewhere online a few months ago and today seemed like a great day to try it out! We love stringing beads on pipe cleaners so I had high hopes that Lucy would also enjoy putting buttons on a pipe cleaner tree. I tried to create a "candy cane" tree but I'll honest, it just looked like a big old mess. I set it up anyway, propping it up using cardboard and created a winter scene using cotton balls, foam snowflakes and homemade colored rice. It might not have looked perfect, but Lucy LOVED it. It was the perfect activity to keep her busy until breakfast and then again after breakfast.
At first she played by herself, then we played together in the afternoon. She loved "decorating" the tree and then, together, we made patterns, sorted the buttons by size and just took turns stringing them and chatting about Santa.
Next time, I think I will wrap the pipe cleaners around something like a stick to make sure it looks more like a tree and holds the weight of the buttons better.
If you try out this activity, I would love to hear how it goes! It's so simple and so much fun, I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
