We love playing with water beads. Supposedly, you can wait for them to dry out and reuse them, but we haven't had much luck with that. I don't like things going to waste, so this time, instead of simply throwing them out, we froze them and had so much fun with this new material.
I used pink water beads so I froze them in heart molds and giant ice cube trays with a splash of water, plastic hearts and sparkles. Everything is more fun with sparkles. Lucy had a blast "rescuing" the hearts and playing with the water beads as they defrosted. It's a great way to transform a material and let children explore it in a new and different way!
I placed the ice cubes out on a tray, added a bowl of water and some of our favorite tools (dropper, spoon, squirt bottle, tongs) and let Lucy play. She enjoyed it for half the morning!
*tapioca pearls are a great taste safe alternative to water beads. I have never tried freezing them, but we love to play with them, too!*
